September 2010--Philippine business icon Dr. Washington SyCip –
founder of the prestigious SyCip Gorres Velayo & Co. (SGV) and
Asian Institute of Management (AIM) - gave a lecture at the Lorange
Institute of Business in Zurich, Switzerland, on 7 September 2010.
The lecture was attended by around 80 businessmen, members of Swiss
academe, Swiss media, Philippine government officials based in Berne
and Geneva, and CEOs of businesses based in Manila and other Asian
countries who are interested in doing business in the Philippines and
Asia or who have established businesses in Zurich and based in Asia
With
his theme of “Doing
Business in the Philippines and Asia,”
Dr. SyCip gave an encouraging observation on the dynamism of the
Asian economy. On the Philippines in particular, he expressed
confidence that President Aquino’s government will provide an
attractive business environment that will spur economic development,
in the light of its integrity, competence, and anti-corruption
policy.
Preceding
Dr. SyCip’s lecture were two workshops: “Opportunities
and Risk Management in Asian Energy Markets,”
and “Experiences
in Doing Business in Asia - the Practitioner’s Point of View.”
Experts from the Philippines, India and Indonesia were the resource
persons on energy markets, and top executives from SGS, Nestle, and
the Zuellig Group shared their business experiences in Asia.
The
lecture-forum concluded with an optimistic note on the Philippines
and was able to arouse the Swiss businessmen’s further interest in
the country. Ambassador Maria Theresa Lazaro of the Philippine
Embassy in Berne acknowledged in her introductory speech that the
well-attended event is an indication of the businessmen’s belief in
the capacity of the Philippines and the region to provide fertile
ground for the expansion of trade and investment relations with
Switzerland.
The
event was organized by the Swiss-Asian Chamber of Commerce, the
Philippine-Swiss Business Council and the Lorange Institute of
Business, in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Berne,
Switzerland.
