FILIPINO AWARD WINNING FILM DIRECTOR BRILLANTE MENDOZA’S FILM “LOLA” IN COMPETITION AT THE FRIBOURG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
18 February 2010 The
Philippine Embassy in Berne reported to the Department of Foreign
Affairs that the city of Fribourg will serve as host to the 24th
Fribourg International Film Festival (FIFF) from 13-20 March 2010 to
promote quality and selected films essentially from Asia, Africa and
Latin America. The films selected by the FIFF engage audiences
with images, stories and ideas that may not be conformist for a Swiss
public.
This year, the organizers have confirmed the participation of award
winning Filipino Director Brillante Mendoza’s film “LOLA” in the
competition category. Mendoza was the grand winner in the
Best Director category in the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival.
He served as member of the jury for the Filmmakers of the Film
Competition for the 62nd Film Festival Locarno in 2009. Mendoza
first won an international award in Locarno with his film Masahista
which won the Golden Leopard in the Video Competition in 2005.
The Philippine Embassy in Berne will be hosting a special reception for
Award-winning Director Mendoza in Fribourg on 14 March 2010, on the day
of the premier showing of his film “LOLA” at the Cap Cine 5 at the
Manor in Fribourg. The Embassy in cooperation with the FIFF
organizers will invite the crème of the Swiss film industry as well as
Swiss and Filipino audiences.
Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland Maria Theresa P. Lazaro said that
the decision of the organizers to show the film “LOLA” is a recognition
of the Filipino’s world-class artistry in film-making.
