Cooperation between Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the
European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) based in Geneva, Switzerland
25 January 2010
The Philippine Embassy in Berne, Switzerland informed the Secretary of
Foreign Affairs that an Expression of Interest was signed between the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the European
Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) on 8 January 2010 at Crown
Plaza Hotel in Manila. The Expression of Interest was signed by
DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro and Professor Rolf Dieter Heurer,
Director General of CERN. The signing was witnessed by Philippine
Ambassador to Switzerland Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Dr. Alumanda dela
Rosa, Director of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute
(PNRI). CERN was represented by Dr. Emmanuel Tsesmelis,
Director of CERN and Dr. Albert de Roeck.
CERN is the world's largest particle physics laboratory based in
Geneva, Switzerland. CERN's main function is to provide the
particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy
physics research. Founded in 1954, CERN is also noted for being the
birthplace of the World Wide Web.
Upon the invitation of the Philippine Ambassador, the CERN
representatives and senior physicists of the Institute decided to make
the visit to the Philippines its first major activity for collaboration
and cooperation for 2010. CERN met with the different agencies
and Institutes affiliated with DOST, the University of the Philippines
National Institute of Physics (NIP), the PNRI, the University of the
Philippines College of Sciences, the Ateneo University Department of
Physics and the De La Salle University Department of Physics.
There are future plans of DOST and CERN to participate in front line
high energy physics experiments at CERN; that CERN will provide the
research programme for Filipino students to complete their post
graduate, doctoral and post doctorate education through the Master’s
and PhD degrees pursued at European universities; that CERN will offer
places in the Summer Student and other training programmes for
participation by selected Filipino students; and possible collaboration
with PNRI on an acceleration program among others.
