BERNE PE JOINS THE FILIPINO PEOPLE IN MOURNING FOR THE LATE PRESIDENT CORAZON C. AQUINO
10 August 2009
The Philippine Embassy in Berne officially opened a book of condolence
for the diplomatic corps and the Filipino community in August 4 for the
late former President Corazon Aquino. A Holy Mass was celebrated at the
Embassy on 7 August.
Despite the summer vacation, the
Embassy received an outpouring of sympathy and respect for the late
President Aquino from the many representatives of the diplomatic corps,
led by the Dean, the Papal Nuncio, Swiss government officials, and the
Filipino community for the condolence book signing. It also received
Notes and letters from various members of the diplomatic community,
government agencies, and organizations.
The Swiss Government was very
supportive of the Philippine Government, especially after President
Aquino’s visit in 1988.This is the only official visit of the
Philippine President to Switzerland.
For over twenty three years, both
the Philippine and the Swiss authorities have been working on the
recovery of illegally obtained assets of the former President of the
Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, as well as those of his relatives and
associates. Never before in the context of judicial assistance have
both countries been obliged to put so much effort into such an
important undertaking.
