Appeal for Understanding in the Delay of Passport Releases
The
Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines has announced a delay
in the processing of ePassport applications as a result of technical
concerns and the surge in the demand for the ePassport.
The delay is primarily the result of maintenance work and upgrades on
the equipment in the ePassport Personalization Center at the Bangko
Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) facility in Quezon City. This also coincided
with the seasonal increase in passport applications as Filipinos start
making preparations to travel abroad this summer. The Department of
Foreign Affairs has been working dosely with the Bangko Sentral to
resolve the issue. Until technical concerns are remedied, processing of
applications will take around eight weeks from the time applications
are received.
The Philippine Embassy in Berne, therefore, hopes passport applicants will understand these temporary difficulties.
Filipinos with expiring passports who cannot forgo their travel may opt
to apply for an extension of the validity of their existing passport
instead of applying for a new one.
