The Philippines and Switzerland have a long history of relations
spanning more than 150 years. On 30 August 2011, we commemorate
the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations
between our two countries. Next year, we celebrate the 150th
anniversary of the establishment of the first Swiss consular
representation in Asia in Manila in 1862. This year, Nestle,
celebrated its 100 years of existence in the Philippines.
With Switzerland, we share values like democracy, justice, human rights
and the rule of law. These shared values make the Philippines
Switzerland’s natural partner in Asia. Under the leadership of
President Benigno S. Aquino III, the Philippines seeks to intensify
foreign relations under the government’s agenda of inclusive national
development and good governance.
Given the sizeable number of Filipinos in Switzerland, they form a
strong pillar in our bilateral relations and have assumed an
“ambassadorial” role for the Philippines. They are one of the
most hardworking and respected foreign nationals in this country.
Together with other Filipinos abroad, they are a source of the
Philippines’ strength and progress.
I look forward to a tour of duty full of engagement and friendship with
Switzerland and the Swiss people, in order to make a difference for our
own country and people.
